Sodium tetrachloropalladate (II)

Sodium tetrachloropalladate(II) is an inorganic compound, a complex chloride of sodium and palladium with the formula Na2[PdCl4].

Some properties:

— forms red-brown crystals;
— readily soluble in water;
— soluble in ethanol;
— forms a crystalline hydrate of composition Na2[PdCl4]·3H2O — also red-brown crystals.

Preparation: chlorine is passed through a suspension of palladium black in a concentrated solution of sodium chloride. Another method is the reaction between solutions of hydrogen tetrachloropalladate(II) and sodium chloride.

Applications: used as a catalyst in organic synthesis.
